Gynecology & Obstetrics
Gynecology and obstetrics (OB/GYN) is a medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology.
Obstetrics is the care of pregnant women and their fetuses, from conception through childbirth and the postpartum period. Obstetricians provide prenatal care, labor and delivery care, and postpartum care. They also manage complications of pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and premature labor.
Gynecology is the care of women’s reproductive health throughout their lives. Gynecologists provide preventive care, such as Pap tests and pelvic exams, as well as treatment for a wide range of conditions, such as menstrual disorders, infertility, and sexually transmitted infections. They also perform surgery, such as hysterectomies and cesarean sections.
